Taking a Zoetrope Fiction Writing Class?

You will be able to logon and begin the class on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 12:01am Eastern Time (i.e. New York City Time). The class runs through Wednesday, December 20, 2006.
PLEASE TRY THE TEST CLASS TODAY
In order to resolve any compatibility problems between your computer and our web site, we ask you to go to the above web address as soon as possible. There you can interact with a test version of the online class and practice submitting files and posting to class discussions.
If you have any problems using the system contact Technical Support by email at: help@write.org.
CLEARING TIME FOR CLASS
One of the most challenging things about being a writer, for most people, is finding the time to work at it. Since you've made the commitment to take a class, this is the perfect time to find those precious hours. Begin figuring out how you can clear at least five hours a week to participate in your class activities. The amount of time you put into your class is directly proportionate to how much you will grow as a writer.
STUDENT WRITING PROJECTS
Each student will have at least two opportunities to present some (or perhaps all) of a writing project to the instructor and fellow classmates for critique. Regardless of the level of your work, this critique process is a valuable part of the learning experience. So if you don't already have a project in mind, or underway, begin working on one or at least formulating a rough idea before class begins. If you're totally stuck, relax - the first weeks of class may inspire some ideas.
GET A HEAD START!
If you do have a project already underway and would like to present your work in the early weeks of class, log in to the student center at http://student.writingclasses.com and click the link to volunteer for early submission. You'll receive a reminder of these instructions five days before your class begins.
We hope you have a great class!
-GWW
Zoetrope Fiction Writing workshops include:
•Weekly craft discussions that incorporate works published in Zoetrope: All-Story.
•Instruction by Zoetrope-affiliated editors.
•Student opportunity to submit a manuscript for review by a Zoetrope: All-Story editor and possible publication in the magazine.
•Special guest chat session with a Zoetrope: All-Story editor or contributing author.
•All workshopped stories reviewed for possible publication in Zoetrope: All-Story magazine

A Day in the Life: Literary Agent

The day in the life of a literary agent really varies. There are large and structured agencies, small independent operators and midsized firms. I work for a midsized work. We represent a lot of estates - the families of deceased authors. Our biggest is probably an award-winning author's estate. I also oversee all of our foreign rights. Some agents specialize in a genre, but all I specialize in is good writing.

9:30: I get into the office. I oversee all of my company's foreign rights. We often have foreign publishers requesting the right to publish something from an estate. I do about five foreign rights contracts a week, like giving a French publisher the right to republish a famous book. I usually spend at least part of my morning dealing with foreign publishers and drawing up contracts. This needs to happen in the morning because of the time difference.

11:00: I look at the rest of my e-mails that aren't from foreign publishers. I get a lot of e-mails from authors. Have you read the new draft? What about chapter 3? That kind of thing.

12:30: Time for a lunch meeting. I meet with an editor I know to try to sell her a manuscript. Whenever I get a new book, I sit down and think about which editor would want it. You can have the greatest book in the world, but it won't do you any good if you can't sell it. The agent usually makes the pitch right at the end of the main course; before that time, there's a lot of chitchat and catching up. The editors usually take the literary agents out to lunch - after all, they need to acquire new projects too.

2:00: I return to the office and return calls. One misconception of literary agents is that they spend their day reading. I never read in the office. I don't have time. I read at home in the evenings and on the weekends. I spend the afternoon negotiating deals with editors and talking to writers. One phone call can take an hour. Being an agent also means you have to be a therapist, especially when dealing with a writer. I have a lot of writers who live in California, and they tend to start calling about noon, when I'm usually out the door.

Editors can take a while to evaluate a project. But if I think a book is perfect for one particular publishing house, you can make an exclusive offer - you don't send it to any other houses - and tell them what you're looking for financially. The turnaround on exclusive offers is much faster.

7:00: After an afternoon of calls, I head out to a book party. In this new era of cost-cutting, only major authors at big publishing houses have parties thrown to launch their books. Some smaller houses will have a party to launch their fall line in its entirety, for example. And sometimes authors will have parties to celebrate their own books.

SHALLA ON: Finding a Book Publisher

Finding a Book Publisher
By Jenna Glatzer
Recently, a few writer-friends on the Absolute Write message boards and I were lamenting the fact that many inexperienced writers get tricked into believing that vanity presses and borderline-vanity presses are traditional publishers. We were talking about the numbers, mostly—how did so many new writers even find these publishers?

SHALLA ON: Tips for Writing Newbies
Survival Tips for the Newbie
By Kristine Williams
As a writer trying to break in to the "real world" of published authors, I've learned some things that might come in handy for the newbies out there. Those just starting their dip into the pit of despair… I mean, the publishing pool.
One of the hardest things to wrap one's brain around is the submission guidelines. At first glance, the newbie is often scared right off. On second, third, and fourth glances, you begin to see through what's being said, and what they really mean.

So you've finally done it. You've finished your prized manuscript - the one you've spent months creating - and the temptation to pop it into a postal package and ship it off to a welcoming editor is tugging at you mercilessly.I urge you to resist that temptation. For now, anyway.

*
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
*

Bound Off wants to read your best short stories out loud!

We are seeking original literary fiction for our upcoming podcasts. Please send stories that are between 250 and 2500 words long.
Although we are an audio publication, we will evaluate manuscripts the old-fashioned way.

Our team of readers and podcast engineers will produce the audio version of your story. If you have the capability to create a high-quality MP3 file, then we could publish your story with you as the reader.
(Although we aim to give authors the chance to read their own work, audio quality is a high priority, so the Bound Off editors reserve the right to make all final audio production decisions.)

We are not considering the following types of writing: non-fiction or personal essays, poetry, stories for children.

ARTICLE: How to Stimulate Creativity

By Burt Goldman

From the moment we get out of bed, we in a state of constant creation. Every thought, every action leads to the creation of some new aspect of our life.

It’s not possible to be bored while being creative. For to be bored is to be doing something with a tint of sameness. It is repetitious because you have done it before. To be creative is to cause something new to come into existence. Boredom and creativity cannot live in the same house. They cancel one another. One of the first things you will see happening is a new appetite for the day. A new appetite for living. And with this appetite will come satisfaction .

So how do you begin your life of renewed creativity? Here are some tips.

SPOILED INK'S SUGGESTIONS ON CRITIQUING

CHARACTERISATION: Do the characters seem real, or are they recognizable stereotypes, and is this a problem in the context of this particular story?

Are the characters’ motives logical and necessary to the story?

Are we meant to identify with any characters, and if so, do we?

DIALOGUE Does the dialogue seem realistic?

Can the reader imagine real people talking as the characters do?

Does the dialogue add to the story, or distract us from it?

SETTING: Does the story have a context and place that is convincing and alive? Is the reader able to visualise each scene?

POINT OF VIEW: Is the POV consistent, or does it leap in the middle of a scene? Is the POV appropriate – do we get a clear enough picture of the principle character’s inner drama – or too much? Could the story be told fmore interestingly from another POV?

DEVELOPMENT: Does the story develop organically, without the reader noticing, or does the narrative make sudden leaps or get stagnant? Does the reader get confused at any point?

PACING: How deeply is the reader drawn into the story? How long does the story take to set up? Is the reader drawn into the story from the beginning? Which is most appropriate for each particular story: non-stop action or character development?

MECHANICS: At the outset, some writers experience trouble with the mechanics of expressing their fiction in words. Story, paragraph and sentence structure are all slaves to the flow of a piece. If something is amiss, the reader will experience the lack of flow immediately.

A critique of a later draft can be invaluable in pointing out some of the specifics that are impeding the narrative flow.
