SHALLA NEWS: CALL-4-SUBMISSIONS AND SHALLA CHATS WITH EDITORS

CALL-4-SUBMISSIONS: THE HARROW

The Harrow seeks stories, poems, and art that fall within the fantasy and supernatural horror genres. The plot should contain or imply the presence of the magical or supernatural. To count as "horror," the work must also evoke an emotion such as apprehension, dread, anxiety, and fear. Horror does not need to shock or disgust; if it evokes a quieter sense of the eerie or uncanny, it still counts as horror.Conventionally structured and character-driven plots are preferred.
CALL-4-SUBMISSIONS: CAYOTE WILD
Coyote Wild is a speculative fiction magazine. All submissions should be original and contain science fiction, fantasy, horror, or wild-card elements. Speculative fiction amazes, perturbs, and delights. Specfic looks into yesterday, tomorrow and the far future from a unique point of reference that sets it apart from other types of writing. Our readers want to be surprised, maybe a bit shocked, perhaps somewhat uncomfortable, but always provoked to think differently about the universe. The ideal submission should make the readers, well, speculate.

SHALLA READS!

Secret Society Girl by Diana Peterfreund is such a fun read and has all the signs of becoming heir apparent to The Devil Wears Prada, so why isn't it?

I'm sure we'll get a lot more fun novels from Diana Peterfreund who's obviously a great talent!

Check out this book!

The M.O.O.D. Lounge
Zondra Hughes
Lulu (2007)
ISBN 9780979166600
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (12/06)

In “The M.O.O.D. Lounge” men finally have learned to sexually satisfy women. In doing so, they manage to set back the women’s movement by decades. In a form of sexual enslavement, the
women have reassumed their roles to serve men, and they also start supporting them. This all includes doing their cleaning, cooking, and taking care of them financially. The men have started
staying at home and not doing anything except engaging in their own sexual interests and pampering themselves. This is not acceptable.
Sex therapist, Dr. Pat Rizzo, who says, “Women are being sexed into stupidity,” has created the M.O.O.D. Lounge to help women overcome their sexual dependence upon men. She calls this condition “Lover’s Lobotomy Syndrome,” or LLS. Using survey results for women, Dr. Rizzo
carefully selects three women who all have major cases of LLS. M.O.O.D. stands for “Multiple Orgasms on Demand.” It is described as “a self-esteem-enhancing journey into erotica that takes
courage, sexual awareness and honesty.”
The cases of the three selected women are reviewed using sex diaries, observations, and confessions.
Their names are Dru, Fawn, and Eva. Each one has a very interesting story to tell about their dysfunctional relationships. Dr. Rizzo has them form a support group in which they first must accept that they have LLS and that their lovers are really losers. The next step is to teach these
women how to sexually satisfy themselves. This involves using B.O.B.s, which are battery operated boyfriends. Once the women learn how to please themselves, it lessens their dependence upon men.
This allows women to become more selective about the men that they choose to have in their lives.

The men that are worth salvaging can be taught to be worthy lovers.
I really enjoyed reading “The M.O.O.D. Lounge.” The author Zondra Hughes has written a fun fictional novel that has capitalized on an issue that seems to be coming too real in our society. There
are plenty of real women that would be diagnosed with LLS. At first, the characters in this story seem to be exaggerated in their behaviors with men. That is what makes it fun to read. As I read
and reflected on this issue, the more I thought about how many real women could be in this story. In the back section of the book there is a “MOOD Manual,” that offers some great advice on sexual
self-satisfaction and becoming a strong empowered woman.

“The M.O.O.D. Lounge” is a must read, especially for women’s groups. The discussions that can come from this book will range from hysterically funny to thought provoking. Women really need
to read this to take back their power!

Tips on Writing Short Stories

What are the publishers and competition judges looking for?

A well-written structured story with a plot they haven't heard at least a hundred times before. So, first of all, HAVE A STORY TO TELL.

Begin with an arresting first paragraph or lead, enough to grab the reader: make him or her curious to know what happens next.

Did you present the story line quickly enough to catch the reader's interest or did you use up a third of the story with a long biographical preamble of the characters or with dialogue between two of them (often left confusingly unnamed)? You may know exactly who is speaking, but the reader may be left bewildered. Never underestimate the power of dialogue in conveying character, but it must contribute to the main focus of the story.

The story may be rejected if it is too slight in content or if the plot is too clichéd. No amount of careful padding and elaborate dialogue can substitute for a story line that is wafer-thin.

The story may be rejected if it is 'top heavy' i.e. too much is spent on the build-up, so that the climax or denouement (as in the twist ending) is relegated to one sentence, leaving the reader bothered and bemused but sadly not bewitched.

Don't signal the twist ending too soon!

If you're telling a fast-moving story, say crime, then keep your paragraphs and sentences short. It's a trick that sets the pace and adds to the atmosphere you are conveying to the reader.

ARTICLE:

Seven Common Character TypesBy Terry W. Ervin II

Fiction writers employ a variety of characters while weavingtheir tales. Beyond the standard definitions of protagonist (themain character in a literary work) and antagonist (the maincharacter or force that opposes the protagonist in a literarywork), recognizing the types of characters and the parts theyplay while reading an interesting story can add to theexperience.

In addition, a fuller understanding of the charactertypes and their uses can increase a writer's effectiveness inweaving his own fictional tales.

Below is a list of common character types, followed by an explanation and short example.Confidante - someone in whom the central character confides, thus revealing the main character's personality, thoughts, and intentions.

The confidante does not need to be a person.

Example: In a story, Melvin Sanders is a detective on the trailof a serial killer. He travels with his pet dog, a pug named Chops. Instead of listening to the radio, Melvin talks to Chops, telling him his theories about the serial killer and his concernhe may never discover the killer's identity.

In this example Chops is a confidante.

Dynamic Character- a character which changes during the course of a story ornovel. The change in outlook or character is permanent. Sometimesa dynamic character is called a developing character.

Example: Ebenezer Scrooge, in A Christmas Carol by Dickens, wasvery stingy with his money. He worked his employees very veryhard for little pay. After his experiences with the ghosts that visited him, he changed his ways, paying his employees a morethan fair wage, providing days off work and actually giving gifts. In this example Ebenezer Scrooge is a dynamic character.

Flat Character- a character who reveals only one, maybe two, personality traitsin a story or novel, and the trait(s) do not change.

Example: In a story about a friendly teacher named Sandra Smith,Louis Drud is a janitor in her building. Louis is always tiredand grumpy whenever Sandra runs across him and says hello. In this example Louis Drud is a flat character. You can read the rest of this article here:http://www.fictionfactor.com/guests/common.html

Novel Ways to Promote Your Novel"

By Patricia Fry

For most authors of fiction, the very idea of promotion is distasteful. It's not uncommon for novelists to break out in hives or develop a nervous twitch when faced with the reality of marketing their books.
As a published author, you know that you must promote your book and you scurry to find your comfort zone. You'll sign up with Amazon.com, of course, put up a website and solicit reviews through the traditional magazines and sites. Those of you with more nerve will try to arrange book signings and, uh-- maybe attend a few local book festivals. And mostly, you'll be met with disappointment.
But there is so much more that you can do to draw attention to your book-- to let readers know that it exists. Here are a few ideas that you may not have thought of: (And they don't even require that you develop the persona of a hard-selling hawker.)

CLEARING TIME FOR CLASS
One of the most challenging things about being a writer, for most people, is finding the time to work at it. Since you've made the commitment to take a class, this is the perfect time to find those precious hours. Begin figuring out how you can clear at least five hours a week to participate in your class activities. The amount of time you put into your class is directly proportionate to how much you will grow as a writer.
STUDENT WRITING PROJECTS
Each student will have at least two opportunities to present some (or perhaps all) of a writing project to the instructor and fellow classmates for critique. Regardless of the level of your work, this critique process is a valuable part of the learning experience. So if you don't already have a project in mind, or underway, begin working on one or at least formulating a rough idea before class begins. If you're totally stuck, relax - the first weeks of class may inspire some ideas.
GET A HEAD START!
If you do have a project already underway and would like to present your work in the early weeks of class, log in to the student center at http://student.writingclasses.com and click the link to volunteer for early submission. You'll receive a reminder of these instructions five days before your class begins.
We hope you have a great class!
