Shalla de Guzman's Connection to the Michael Jackson Trial

hi all, first of all, yeah, I've been watching every riveting second of E!'s reenactments of the MJ trial. How exciting!
.
First of all, let me just say that watching the Bashir documentary made me think, "Wow, Michael Jackson's a pretty cool guy!" Not until then did I know about MJ opening his home to cancer patients etc. I just heard on the news how about a thousand children with debilitating diseases go to Neverland ranch each month. That's amazing. I loved his music, I love his talent etc. So, go Michael!
.
My take? He is a big kid. It takes one to know one. And let me just say, I've got zero probs with sleep overs except in my case, instead of kids, how about a bunch of cats and pets? I nap with my cat Silk and Cairo and it's so fun. We watch TV and read books and just hang out.
.
Well, on cross examination, the accuser admits never going to the police until after he and his family spoke to two lawyers. $$$,$$$?
Most probably. (He said other damaging stuff as well.)
.
Anyway--oh, and as for my "connection to the Michael Jackson trial"-- if you watched the reenactments, the accuser mentioned a teacher named Mister Geralt. I watched that and said, "Hey, I know a teacher named Mister Geralt from Junior High."
.
Then the kid mentions the name of the school. And I said, jackpot! That's where I went.
.
You can Vote on E! Guilty or Innocent?

You're a Michael Jackson fan? Know about the rally to support Michael?

Writing SHALLA CHATS = good karma :)

hi everyone!
.
Southern Cali's lovely today, clear skies... and I just pulled out weeds off our lawn and I'm cleaning and fixing the yard up for Spring! Everything's wonderful... and I say, it's cause of the great, positive energy I've been generating with SHALLA CHATS.
.
What's SHALLA CHATS?
.
I've been interviewing published writers, even agents and then I submit them to newsletters and writer's groups and for online posting. It's great publicity for the them (writers, agents etc) and helpful for me too. I've got my bi-line on the articles and link to my shalladeguzman.com plus, I'm really enjoying myself meeting all these successful people. (I'm in a small town almost two hours from LA, so it's usually just me and pets during the day) Meeting all these new individuals and getting the inside scoop on writing and getting novels published is great!
.
oh yeah, I said writing SHALLA CHATS is good karma. Why? Good things are happening, like this morning, one of my dogs, Alex, disappears. He's big, chao-golden retriever. So I'm calling for him. I've got my two other dogs, labradors, waiting with me, when an SUV pulls up and this woman asks, "Are you missing a dog?"
.
"Yes, he was just here...I--"
.
"My husband and I found him. He was wandering the streets."
.
Wow, could it really be Alex? Keeping my eyes directly on hers, I ask, just to make sure, "Big yellow dog?"
.
"Yes. My husband's with him now, trying to find the owner."
.
Anyway, as it turns out, Alex sat on the front porch of the house and wouldn't move. The nice woman and her husband turn out to be our new neighbor so what a great way to meet them.
.
Everything turns out perfectly. Alex is well and we've got the nicest neighbors.
.
Then, half an hour later, after the pets and I have all settled in, the doorbell rings. Turns out another neighbor baked a pie and had extras and decided to give us a huge portion.
.
All in all, it's been a perfect day and it's not even noon.
I feel it's the positive, loving energy generated with SHALLA CHATS. How? I've kept my intensions clear and loving: I'll do interviews that helps others to promote themselves. I trust that positive energy from that will spill into my life, renewing it, revitalizing, energizing.
.
It's true what we send out (our intention not the act), comes back ten-fold or more.
.
As for my examples, it's not just the free pie or someone helping out with my dog, it's the fantastic, beautiful feeling that everything's right in the world. And I'm in a peaceful, serene, loving place.

SHALLA: Book List for Writers

Book List (and CD’s) for Writers
.
I’ve read many books on writing. Here are my favorites:
.
It’s good to know how to add humor to your writing project. Even a drama has to have bits with humor otherwise it’s too much of a downer.
.
Comedy Writing Step by Stepby Carol Burnett (Foreword), Gene Perret
I like this one because the tips are good, helpful. I can use the tips and they work. It has exercises too that are very useful in honing in the craft of writing funny.
.
For Plotting, what else but the Plot Doctor by Carolyn Greene. It’s step by step guide from building points necessary to your story (Inciting Incident, Plot Points etc. what they are and where they go) It’s helped me write good, tight, one page synopsis easily and a lot faster than anything.
.
Then to actually write scenes, this has been best Scene and Structure (Elements of Fiction Writing)by Jack M. Bickham This guy is a genius (yes, my opinion but it’s true J The technique he teaches in this book on how to build scenes, how Internalizations are constructed (repeat scene goal, interpret how things are going: show secondary goals as they may develop…What View Point character must try next, etc.) Linking scenes. What’s a sequel and how to write them? On and on… great, great, fantastic, very helpful book. (And good price too).
.
After reading Jack M. Bickham’s Scene and Structure, I had to read his other books. Writing and Selling Your Novel is more general but it’s good for beginners. It goes from thinking of your story idea to getting your novel published.
.
I got other books for plotting too. And if I didn’t have the Plot Doctor, this is a good one too Building Better Plotsby Robert Kernen Good ideas but I liked the step-by-step approach in Plot Doctor’s more.
.
Okay, those books are for the writing of your novel. But there’s more to getting published. You not only need to write a “damn good novel” you have to be able to sell it, right?
.
I realize it takes more than talent and skills, it takes luck. So, this book’s a gem for that.
.
How to Make Luck: The Seven Secrets Lucky People Use to Succeedby Marc Myers
.
“Luck, advises Myers, means mastering one or two of these lucky behaviors: Make life look easy, but don't rub it in; make yourself appealing; be as curious as a child; improve the lives of other people; let power brokers own a piece of you; don't burn your bridges. The book includes chapters on each of these secrets as well as interviews with successful people and tips for limiting bad luck.”
.
People call me lucky. I’m the girl who bumps into someone who turns out to be an editor just looking for someone like me to pitch to her. And of course I’ll turn out to have the perfect pitch so I do. Something like this happened to me 7 times at the last conference I went to, a couple months ago. Got 7 requests. Now I’m just finishing the novel already and send it out. Anyway, you can be lucky too (And if you’re already lucky, you can get luckier). It’s like an energy. You think lucky, you get lucky. Anyway, get this book and see for yourself.
.
For more alternative luck makers. Sure, I try them all, I’m open to everything that will help me publish my books (the honest way of course):
Creating Money: Keys to Abundance (Life Mastery Series)by Sanaya Roman, Duane Packer
.
"Get quiet, close your eyes, and think of something you wanted that you got..." (more) I wanted to make sure I’m open to more good luck and good things. So this one, just makes sure I’m open to getting published and becoming an over night super star with millions of fans (hey, you never know J Some people may have negative feelings about fulfilling their dreams. I wanted to make sure I get rid of any obstacles that would keep me from success. This one’s very helpful. I love Orin.
.
But then I went further—HYPNOSIS: “I can write... I am a writer… I love writing… Writing is fun…”
.
For hypnosis tapes, I go to wendi.com
Need a confidence booster to pitch your book?
Mover and Shaker Have you every watched a person who is influential and wondered how they have so much energy? They have a positive attitude, boundless energy, communicate in a way that gets to the point and they are effective in many areas. They get noticed! You can too. Become a mover and shaker and shake up your world!
Because I write funny, I felt “funny” should be a part of my personality:
.
Life of the Party: Have you ever wished you could be funnier, quick witted, and the life of the party?
.
Learn to let go and allow your true inner-magnetism to shine through. Being able to shine in social situations can be good for business, good for finding a mate, and putting others at ease. Let your sense of humor come out and make you a happier person.
.
Fun Stuff!
.
Will editors like your book? Will your manuscript make billions and gazillions of dollars? Will you be the next Nora Roberts? Well, let’s ask the psychic shall we?
.
This one’s fun and if you believe there are no coincidence only a big master plan, hey—Here’s Morgana’s Free Tarot Reading

How to Write a Synopsis

Writing the synopsis gets easier with practice. That's good news for many, I'm sure. I use the Plot Doctor. It makes writing the synopsis sooo much easier. It goes step by step.
Here's HOW I EAT, ER - WRITE A SYNOPSIS By Victoria J. Coe
.
This may help you. It's an online "University" where they offer a 4 week course on The Plot Doctor by Carolyn Greene. They call the class Romancing the Plot Doctor. I haven't taken the class, nor do I feel the need to, reading and using The Plot Doctor has been enough for me. I'm on my way to publication, baby! Next year, I'll be at RWA National giving lectures (I cross my fingers everyday and keep knocking on wood I have to soften my hands with cocoa butter and aloe vera at the same time!)
.
That's it for now.
Oh and if you're ready for someone to read your synopsis, I say, first get a "smart" friend/husband/wife to read it for the basics. That your sentences end with a period. That you spelled your name right, etc.
.
Second, I suggest getting a critique partner. How? Join a group like Romance Writers of America or some other writing group, meet people and see who needs a critique partner you can exchange and edit your work with.
.
Third, if you're ready to pay out, some writer's groups offer critiquing. I'd check the critiquers out first. I'm not paying out unless the reader's any good. You don't want to receive critiques that will make your writing worse. Which reminds me, you should probably stay away from groups that offer critiquing unless you're sure the critiquers know what they're doing. ie. they're published or is a publisher/editor or at least teaches a class in creative writing and is good at it. You get the picture :)
.
You can also try freelance editors. My freelance editor is a published writer. But more than that I like the way she writes and I've tested out about 10 pages with her before committing my manuscript to her editing and found, yeah, this clicks. Freelance editors can charge from cents a page to several dollars per page.
.
My suggestion: see if the freelance editor will do a try out, say 10 pages (for novels) and see if you're compatible and comfortable with his/her work. I'll write an article about how to find a freelance editor in the future.
.
You can check with Bev Rosenbaum with her prices if you're interested. (she doesn't do try outs but for something like $30 to get your first chapter critiqued is a pretty good deal. She's a published author with Harlequin and she used to be an editor for them. Her prices are pretty reasonable. You can google her and you'll get more info.
.
Best of luck to you! Write with passion! Happy Writing!!! Shalla www.shalladeguzman.com

How to Write Sympathetic Characters

What are sympathetic characters?
They're the Scarlet O'Hara and the Carrie of Sex and the City. People can relate to them. People feel for them. Viewers root for them to win and feels loss when they lose. These are the kind of characters you like your protagonist to be and all other characters as well.
.
As James Patrick Kelly puts it:
One whose motivations readers can understand and whose feelings they can comfortably share. This is the kind of character of whom naive readers will say "I could identify with her." The protagonist is often, but not always, sympathetic. Note that a sympathetic character need not be a good person. In George Orwell's 1984, despite the fact that he betrays Julia and his own values by embracing Big Brother, Winston Smith remains a sympathetic character.
.
Read more on James Patrick Kelly's web page on "You and Your Characters."
.
Anyway, I'm creating more sympathetic characters and my question was:
hi everyone, let's say a character is abnoxious and rude on the outside, but that's because she's scared and insecure on the inside?
to make readers care for her, say, the first 10 pages, would you suggest divulging her darker background right away? or?
.
how do you make a character like that sympathetic?

.
Suggestions I received:
1. Include animals, kids and older people-A character who is kind to animals, or who's a kind/good baby sitter (good to children) or takes care of his or her elderly mother etc. touch readers' hearts.
.
So a character doesn't have to be completely good.
.
Let's say Scarlet O'Hara: She's seducing a married man, she's too pretty that everybody's jealous and she likes that plus she does anything to make money (uses prisoners to work for almost nothing at her lumber business).
.
Yet, she's a sympathetic character. Why?
1. Because she's kind to her father and supports him. She's friendly with their slaves and we feel she loves and occassionally follows her mammie. Scarlet loves and honors her mother. And even though she complained practically kicking and screaming, Scarlet delivers Melanie's baby and drives them back home.
.
2. Because we understand her motivation.
She's supporting her family, her flew-over the coo coo's nest- father, her sisters and their home, Tara. In other words we know her reasons why she's doing what she's doing. And of course her reason is noble. Ie. Scarlet wants to save her home, her family's land, their legacy, Tara.
.
So, sure Scarlet keeps marrying men she doesn't love so she can use them, but still she's got a kind heart somewhere there. So we forgive her. Nobody's perfect. And that's another thing, make sure your characters aren't all good or all bad. To make them read "real" you got to give them both sides, like real people are.
.
3. Characters present all sides of the argument.
This one's a little more advanced: "In order for the argument of a story to be complete, all approaches to solving a problem must be represented. This is the purpose of Characters. Each Character illustrates one or more ways in which one might address a problem. These different approaches are commonly referred to as Character Traits. We call them Character Elements." For more, here's The Chemistry of Characters
.
Me? I've used Dramatica which sets things up for you. Maybe it can help you too.
Resources:
How to Write Honest Characters: Why do people create cardboard characters? Why is it so difficult to create a character with a different point of view and purpose in life who acts differently from others - a unique individual?
.
This chapter is a basic overview of the elements of NeoAristotelian theory for the analysis of dramatic presentations. Sitcom: What It Is, How It WorksNeoAristotelian Analysis This one covers Elements of Drama:
Action
Character
Thought
Diction
Music
Spectacle

Writers: Learn to Write Dialogue ie. Use TV transcripts and Movie Scripts

Want to figure out how to write convincing dialogue?
Want to make each character identifiable by their speech patterns and their quips "Yeah man!" or "Whatever..."?
.
Well how 'bout this tip? Study scripts. They're mostly all dialogue. And best of all, lots of scripts and transcripts are free on the net.
.
Okay then, for Drew's Script O'Rama Here you get TV and Movie Scripts
Script Crawler for TV and Movie scripts and transcripts

Writing Schedule, Psychics and Chickens

Right now I'm watching a Tivo-ed Montel Williams-Sylvia Browne Wednesday! Last night I wondered, is speaking of myself so openly good or bad? You know about this spirituality stuff. As questions swam in my head, I sit down and turned on the TV to clear my mind. I see Sylvia Browne's been recorded. I click on it and here's the first things she tell Montel:
.
"World reknowned psychic, Sylvia Browne!" (applause, applause)
.
"What do you think right now is the tenor of the people that you talk to in the country?"
.
"--they're tired of being dogmatically religionistic."
(huh? say wah?)
.
anyway, Sylvia goes on to say more and more people are opening to spirituality. I agree with this. I've turned vegetarian last year. Why? I just can't eat animals anymore.
.
I feel connected with them more and think they're so much better alive than on my plate. I had cousins who lived in a province in the Philippines, Visaya, and they had chickens. That's where they got eggs for food. Having been around them when I visited some school breaks, I remember these animals can feel, they think, they cry, they laugh. Oh, maybe it's just me watching Chicken on the Run over and over but I can't eat chicken anymore.
.
On reason to write and become rich and famous? I'm buying a big house, big enough to have chickens as pets.
To summarize, for psychic chickens go to psychic chickens
.
Okay, so Writing Schedule. It's good to list things your writing agenda everyday. You can consult motivational speakers, Brian Tracy and Anthony Robbins for more info.
What I'm doing today:
1. put all SHALLA CHATS interviews into Yahoo Group Files (edit first)
2. Put all SHALLA CHATS interviews into Yahoo Group Calendar
3. Put website release date on Yahoo Group Calendar
4. Write Q&A for Literary Agent Scott Eagan of Greyhaus Agency
5. Watch Roseanne and study characters, find scripts of show and study dialogue patterns

Wednesday

Website to Promote Shalla: Writer, Show Producer, Model, etc.

Where do writers find their story? From life. We write what we know, and what we don't we imagine.
.
At 33, I feel I've lived a million lives. Great, that should help me with my stories, plots, characters... and you know what? It does. I've got so many interesting twists and turns in my "noodle" bursting to come out and play.
.
Maybe this is the Blog of an up coming super star. That would be nice. You know what I'll do with fame and fortune? Fun Stuff. Like, producing theatrical shows with lots of music and dancing and scenes from my novels or stories. I'm ready you know. I've got a producer lined up, Sharon d. of D. Miscellany, with choreographer, the multi-talented Roger Fojas. We've done shows before, like Spellbound Fashion Show, and the next one's going to be spectacular. (Money goes to charity, like my mother's orphanage in the Philippines, Angels of Hope.)
.
I love being on stage. Enjoy being in front of hundreds even thousands of people and just talking, entertaining them with my jokes. Esteelo by Toy Alano designed my dresses the past several shows I hosted. They're all gorgeous evening gowns. I love the glitter and the lights. And I've got great ideas for my books. TV show appearances. Hi Jay Leno! How you doin' Oprah :) Then when they do a screenplay of my novel, I get to go to the Oscars. Hi Joan Rivers, like my dress? Then I'll wear Michael Kohrs and maybe even Project Runway's Austin Scarlett's designs.
.
Then I'll be on the cover of People Magazine, Vogue, Glamour, the TV Guide and... oh wait, was I just day dreaming again? Ooops, 'scuse me.
.
And then I smile, knowing I just told the Universe what I like to experience next.
.
What I'm doing today:
1. Literary Agent Scott Eagan of Greyhaus Agency just agreed to be interviewed at SHALLA CHATS and my chapter newsletter, so I'll set up some questions for him.
2. Finish my website. My husband just took out ads showing up on the template I did so now I'm free to create the rest of the site (that's the thing about copying a website format online, you can get ads, mind you I'm just copying the layout, you know like 3 columns here and four rows instead of 1 etc.)
3. I'll figure out how to build an animated gif and post it up there
4. Get "releases" from models/actors/performers on clips I may use on my site
My Shalla de Guzman site is, what else? www.shalladeguzman.com I'm fixing it up. Snazzying it along.
:) Shalla here, signing off for now, to have fun and enjoy life with websites, cats, dogs and all

Tuesday

Shalla Website Diva?

Okay, so I was creating my website yesterday, trying to put "frames" but first I had to learn what frames were etc. By 3PM I've been up 8 hours, figuring out frames and fixing up my site www.shalladeguzman.com then it happened. Webby.
.
Who's Webby? Webby's an entity I've created, I think. (Please check Creating Magickal Entities : A Complete Guide to Entity Creationby David Michael Cunningham, Taylor Ellwood, T. Amanda R. Wagener for info)
.
All I know is, I figured out frames, figured out tables, figured out a logo, style and colors for my website that afternoon.
.
How did I do this? All I did was obsessively concentrate on the question: How do I do frames and make my site look snazzy? Over and over I thought about this. Not purposefully, that's just how my mind works. Like I said, a bit obsessive.
.
I'm reading that that gathers energy, related to the intention. Ie. I chose to do a website, focused on it and thus got the energy of doing a website. What helps is not having negative thoughts like "this is going to be hard" or "this will take a while" or "this is impossible!"
I could have easily thought any of these but what's the point? Why make it harder on myself?
.
So here's what I'm doing today:
1. Tighten Up Welby and mine's website design
2. Get my articles out. A few minutes ago, I got my Writers: Boost Your Website Traffic on the April issue of Chick Chat www.chicklitwriters.com and the SHALLA CHATS interview with Tina Gerow on "The Great, the Okay and the Ugly of E-Publishing" just got picked up by FF&P's newsletter. Great. I'm happy :)
.
I'm feeling I'm supposed to have my writer's website up. I'm feeling I'm supposed to get a producer and choreographer ready 'cause soon as my book gets published, we're throwing a big bash. Sure, promotional stuff. Plus I loooove it! Being out there, on stage, performing. Only this time, I'll have my book. Maybe we'll choreograph a delectible scene from my novel. Maybe I'll get Mr. Belgium back to do the lead (he modeled for our last Spellbound Fashion Show, Dec. 2004 at the Stella Adler Theatre)

Thanks for Visiting!

Come back soon and check out my Best Sellers :)
